CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AS WELL AS ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Extracurricular activities are activities performed by learners that land outside the sphere of the regular curriculum of school or university or college education. Extracurricular activities exist at all levels of education, via 4th-6th, junior high/high university, college and university education. Such activities are often voluntary rather than mandatory, nonpaying, social, philanthropic as opposed to scholastic, and involve others of the same age. College students often coordinate and immediate these activities under teachers sponsorship, although student-led projects, such as self-employed newspapers, are routine.

The extra curriculum built its initial appearance in American educational institutions in the nineteenth century. That complemented the curriculum just as much as subverted this.
